Inside Lehigh Valley Girls Hoops
Week 4
Monday 12/18
Aubrey Pollard scores 1,000th point on the road at Palmerton
Northern Lehigh’s standout senior Aubrey Pollard entered Monday night needing just five points to reach the 1,000 point milestone. It took longer than expected, but late in the third quarter, she got open under the basket for the layup and the achievement. Following the game, Aubrey commented on her accomplishment: “I had nerves the entire first half. I think I was getting in my head. I came out [in the] 2nd half and steadied my thoughts. I have never aimed to be a 1,000 point scorer, but I thought it was possible. But when it happened, I knew I did something so many aim for. I felt relieved, excited, and proud of myself all in one.” Aubrey becomes the 9th player to reach the 1,000 point mark in Northern Lehigh school history.

Northwestern Lehigh 46, Catasauqua 41
The Rough Riders and Tigers entered Monday’s contest with four game win streaks; something had to give. Early on, it seemed Northwestern Lehigh would be in trouble, as Hailey Jenkins and Sophia Becker got out to fast starts, scoring 7 and 5 respectively in the first quarter. Catasauqua fell behind 14-8, but opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run to tie things up. The teams stayed mostly even for the remainder of the first half, with Catty holding a 25-23 advantage. Coming out in the second half, the Rough Riders turned it over three straight times, and the Tigers made them pay, as five different players scored in the quarter. In the fourth, Brook Balliet drained a triple from straight on, as she and her teammates tried to hold Hailey Jenkins at bay. Following a pair of missed free throws by the Tigers, the Rough Riders got the ball back with :14.5 left. Brook Balliet stole the ball and laid it in at the other end to seal the victory. Cara Thomas led Northwestern Lehigh with 16. Hailey Jenkins went for 27 in the losing effort.

Other notes from Monday:
- Palmerton defeated Northern Lehigh 37-32. With Hannah Barry and Megan Matsko unavailable for the game, other Blue Bombers would need to step up, and they did. Mikayla Pengelly led all scorers with 12. Sydney Frantz and Cate Morgan each had 6. First year head coach Jeremy Coleman noted “it was good for our team to play a close game and come out on top. We had several girls step up and it was a quality win for us.”
- The Slaters defeated Saucon Valley 38-14. Avery Nelson drained four 3-pointers and led all scorers with 14. Julia Pinter had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds
- Southern Lehigh took a 16-3 first quarter lead over Salisbury and never looked back in a 41-27 victory. Tessa Seagreaves went for 21 points
- Josh Kopp’s Crusaders won another big early-season game, defeating Pen Argyl 45-34. Green Pond held the Green Knights to three points in the second quarter, notching a 20-12 halftime lead. Carly Campbell scored 14 and Emily Lessig had 11. In the loss, Ellie Wallbillich scored 14.
- Luna Lopez for Moravian Academy scored 19, including five 3-pointers, in a 36-20 win over Wilson
TUESDAY 12/19
Allentown Central Catholic 36, Easton 57
Size and speed were the keys for the Red Rovers, as they dominated the Vikettes from start to finish Tuesday night. Nearly every shot ACC took was contested and closed out on quickly, especially from beyond the arc, where the VIkettes shot 3/17. Evalyse Cole got things going with six in the first quarter, as Easton took a 15-7 lead and doubled that to a 32-16 halftime margin. Kourin Carew was a constant force, making seven field goals and drawing three shooting fouls. By halftime, Sammy Roth had three fouls, while Abbey Kofroth and Milly Wolf had two each. In her return to action, Molly Driscoll scored 23 of her team’s first 30 points. The Vikettes shot just 25% from the field on the night, constantly under siege by a speedy Red Rovers defense. Carew led Easton with 19; Evalyse Cole scored 12.

Thursday 12/21
Lansdale Catholic 60, Bethlehem Catholic 23
Bethlehem Catholic entered the night after victories of 31, 14, and 34. They found themselves on the other side of the rout as the Lansdale Catholic Crusaders held them to their fewest points since a 51-22 loss at Easton a year ago. The Crusaders took a seven point halftime lead and Olivia Boccella helped turn it into a mercy rule victory, knocking down seven triples in the second half and eight overall. Almost all of them were mirror images, as she was wide open in the corner for the uncontested shots. Meanwhile, the Crusaders were stifling to say the least, holding the Hawks to 7/43 from the field and 4/25 from range.
Other notes from Thursday
- Molly Driscoll’s second game back was much like her first, as she poured in seven treys and 26 overall on the road at Emmaus. Allentown Central Catholic took an 18-3 first quarter lead and had a similar 12-5 third quarter effort. Emmaus had a strong second quarter, cutting the deficit to just four points, but the Vikettes prevailed 50-40. Read more on this game at EmmausSports.com
