TUESDAY 1/30

Emmaus 43, Central Catholic 41

A rivalry was renewed at Rockne Hall, as the Green Hornets came in to face a rejuvenated Vikettes team with Molly Driscoll back at the point. It was a defensive first quarter, but Sofie Laird came off the bench and hit a big left-wing three for Emmaus to give them an 11-6 lead after one. The Vikettes turned up the tempo for the rest of the half, nailing five transition layups. Three of those came from Milly Wolf. Armani Brickhouse added a top of the key triple and the Vikettes seemed to be on their way with a 24-18 halftime lead. Central Catholic kept the lead after three, with 3-pointers by Wolf and Driscoll separated by just over 90 seconds. In the final stanza, Sofie Laird hit another big three off the bench, followed by two layups from Gabby DeVita and one from Kayla Snyder off of late turnovers by the Vikettes. The transition game that had worked for Central Catholc in the first half was thwarted by Emmaus sending two girls back. The DeVita layup with 3:22 left gave Emmaus their first lead of the second half. An Armani Brickhouse layup with 2:22 left tied the game at 40 and Milly Wolf hit one of two free throws to put Central back on top 41-40 with 50 seconds left. Emmaus dribbled into the front court and a held ball was called. The possession stayed with Emmaus and a shot was missed. Armani Brickhouse was whistled for a oul, giving Emmaus one final opportunity with seven seconds left. The inbound pass went to  Kayla Snyder and she set herself for an open wing three point shot. It connected with four seconds left. The long heave for the Vikettes nearly also hit, but rimmed out, giving Emmaus the victory. “These kids deserve it. We’ve been through it. We worked so hard. This is a good win for the Emmaus program overall. The girls really dialed in. They stuck to the gameplan and trusted in one another,” were coach Kelsey Gallagher’s thoughts following the victory. Kayla Snyder on her game winning shot: “Mya got a rebound before that and Sofie set a hard screen for me to hit the three. It’s a really big win for me and for the team. It’s really good to hit the winning shot and it was a big team effort for everybody.”

Freshman Kayla Snyder hit the game-winning shot as Emmaus defeated Central Catholic

FRIDAY 2/2

Northern Lehigh 65, Northwestern Lehigh 47

It had been 24 games and 13 years since the last time the Bulldogs defeated the Tigers. Not only did Northern Lehigh end that streak, they ended it with an exclamation point.

At the outset, the game was very back and forth. The first quarter ended with the teams tied at 16. Teegan Simms banged home two triples, as the freshman continued her sensational debut season. The second quarter opened with a 5-0 Bulldogs run. Aubrey Pollard got inside for a layup and was fouled, scoring her 1,000th point as a Bulldog. She had previously celebrated her career 1,000th point this season and surpassed her career 1,300th on the night. Following an Emma Freeman top of the key three that tied the game at 25, Northern Lehigh began its run. They would close the half on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a Pollard layup and long balls from Simms and Dekota Barthold. By the start of the fourth quarter, that run was 28-7. Sophia Schaffer’s three ball was the only field goal for Northwestern, ending a nearly 11 minute drought. Katelyn Barthold had a strong second half, scoring 13 of her 16 points. She remarked on their second half takeover of the game: “Our coach had us play man and it allowed us to not let them shoot as much.” On the difference between the first meeting and this game: “Our team chemistry is very high. We work way better as a team together. No one is selfish and we look for the easy shot and the good shot, not the first shot.”

Aubrey Pollard and Cadence Whalen joined LSVSports and EPASN Sunday to talk about Northern Lehigh’s first victory over NW Lehigh in 13 years

Emmaus 42, Parkland 50

Coming off an emotional last-second victory on the road at Central Catholic, Emmaus found themselves in another tightly contested game against a quality opponent.

Talia Zurinskas started strong in the game, scoring eight in the first quarter, propelling Parkland to a 17-11 lead after one. She would extend that lead to 24-13 midway through the second with her first of two treys. With 2:14 to go in the half, however, Madi Siggins would pick up her third foul and be forced to sit for the remainder of the half. Behind a steal and foul shot from Kayla Snyder, Emmaus was able to cut the lead to 27-21 and nearly got closer, but the Trojans got an Isabella Hallal bucket before the buzzer to lead 29-21 at the break.

As was the case against Central Catholic, Emmaus came out strong in the third quarter, notching four combined layups from Mya Cooper and Gabby DeVita. Zurinskas hit from long range to keep the Hornets at bay, but Emmaus would end up leading 35-34 late in the third on another Cooper layup. Siggins returned in the third and her layup along with two Delaney Chilcote free throws would have Parkland leading 39-35 after three. Fouls began to mount against Emmaus as shooting ran cold. In the fourth quarter, Parkland went 10/12 from the charity stripe, while Emmaus received no free throw opportunities in the second half. Fouls in the second half ended 12-3 in favor of the Trojans. Zurinskas and Siggins finished with 19 and 18 points respectively, while both Gabby DeVita and Mya Cooper had 14 for the Hornets. The loss for Emmaus could ultimately mean they will miss the EPC tournament, pending results Monday night. When asked about the Emmaus comeback attempt and how Parkland handled it, Madi Siggins said, “Stay with it. Sometimes we get a little frantic, but once we stay together and stay with it, we can handle any pressure that comes towards us. Emmaus played us really well tonight. It was a great win—a lot of energy and a lot of heart on the court tonight and those are the kind of games you want to play in.”

Madi Siggins finished the game with 18 points as Parkland fended off Emmaus 50-42
