Colonial League Girls Basketball Previews

It all begins Friday, as Palmerton looks to defend their Colonial crown, Notre Dame Green Pond tries for another district title, and many other teams look to take that next step. We’d like to thank all the coaches and staff who helped put these previews together.

Southern Lehigh(6-16)

Head Coach: Sydney Slone(4th year)

Key Losses: Tessa Seagreaves (averaged 14 points, 4 rebs per game), Reese MacIntosh (averaged 3 points, 4 assists, 4 steals per game), Allison Bodner (averaged 6 points per game)

Key Returners: Taylor McDonald (averaged 5 points, 6 rebounds), Piper Gluck (averaged 3 points, 5 rebounds per game), Cassidy Clausnitzer (averaged 4 points, 2 assist, 2 steals per game)

Season Outlook: Southern Lehigh girls basketball is looking to build off our momentum from last season and building on our fundamentals in order to make a competitive run in the league and district.

Palmerton(23-2; Colonial League champions)

Head Coach: Jeremy Coleman(2nd year)

Key Losses: Hailey Andrews, Hannah Barry, Sydney Frantz, Megan Matsko

Key Returners: Ella Baumgardt (12), Mikayla Pengelly (12), Courtney Connell (11), Cate Morgan (11)

Key Newcomers: Hailey Barry (11), Dublyn Getch (9), Jalynn Herman (10), Leah Rumfield (11), Grace Schneider (11), Taylor Wasilewski (10)

Season Outlook: In the 2024-25 season we will look to continue our success from the 2023-24 season despite graduating several key contributors from last year’s squad. It won’t be easy to duplicate the 23-2 record and colonial league championship from last year but our team has been looking forward to this new season and the new challenge.  We will need some returning players to step up into new roles and hopefully have some less experienced players establish themselves as contributors.  Although we lost some impact players from last year and had a disappointing off-season injury, those returning now have 1 year of experience in the new coaching system that began last year.  We are looking forward to building off that familiarity and adding some new wrinkles to our offense and defense.  This is a motivated group and we are determined to be a major contender in the colonial league and now District 11 4A classification.

Palisades(7-14)

Head Coach: Karlee Krchnavi(3rd year)

Key Losses: Amelia Smith, Chesney Mosher, Kaylei Gruver, Bri Hunter, Cora Anderson, and Grace McArdle all graduated. Those 6 seniors were the primary varsity players. Those 6 were in constant rotation and had played together for years so their chemistry on the court was great. They knew each other very well and they knew how to play with each other. They were also all natural leaders. So losing all of them is pretty significant.

Key Returners: Ella Young and McKenzie Leonhardt. These two were freshmen last year and they got minutes at the varsity level in addition to the six seniors. They are both really tall and are both going to be key returners this year.

Key Newcomers: With graduating 6 seniors we have a bunch of girls who will be the new starters for the team. I wouldn’t call them newcomers, but I would be on the lookout for Senior Brooklynn Lucas, Junior Lila Stiansen, Junior Riley Alkhas, and Junior Carly Evleth.

Season Outlook: As mentioned already, we lost a big group last year who all contributed to varsity minutes. This year is going to look different but in a good way. We do have another solid group who’s been playing for years and is lined up and ready to go. The Colonial league also added a few teams so that is something that we are excited for. New teams and new competition. Overall I’m looking forward to the season and looking forward to what we will accomplish this year.

Head Coach: Ed Ziegenfuss(4th year)

Key Losses: Graduated 8 seniors

Key Returnees: Sr. Avery Nelson – 15 ppg, 7 reb per game, so. Aubrie Labar 6 ppg, 5 rpg

Key Newcomers: Jr. Jackie Miller – missed most of last season with injury, Jr. Grace Hartzell

Season outlook:  After a season plagued with injuries last year, the girls from the bench saw a lot of varsity time .  That experience will be what we are counting on.  Avery needs 174 points for a 1000, and we know she will get the majority of the attention from our opponents; other girls will need to step up.

Key Newcomers: Shahd Suleiman, Roxanna Cardenas, Lauren  Scialla, Sophia Gunning

Season Outlook: We are a young team with only one senior.  My staff and I are trying to build the program after some unsuccessful seasons.  They enjoyed a great summer playing together and I am looking forward to seeing that continued growth.   It is a good group of girls, willing to learn and be coached. I know they are looking forward to getting the season underway. Their focus is on one game at a time and improving on their skills each and every day.

Head Coach: Chris Heery(4th year)

Key Losses: Aubrey Pollard, Cadence Whalen

Key Returners: Dekota Barthold, Katelynn Barthold, Tegan Simms, Kylee Snyder, Ariana Williams

Season Outlook: We are excited to pickup where we left off last season. We lost two great players from last year, but we have talented players in the program. We will look for more scoring from Simms and the Barthold sisters. We start out with a tough schedule in the beginning of the season, so we will have to take it one game at a time. Williams and Snyder will also have a bigger part in our offense this year. We are optimistic.
