Entering the New Year with a record of 8-1 and taking on the 5-5 Blue Mountain Eagles, Northampton was looking to put on a show in front of it’s many great alumni that were being honored during the game. However, a strong 4th quarter by Blue Mountain put those good vibes to bed, as Northampton was stunned on their home court 65-58.
The 1st quarter started as many would expect. Northampton riding the hot shooting of their Sr. superstar, Noah Walakovits, who was the leading scorer after 1 with 5 pts on 2 of 3 shooting. Beck Henninger was the leading scorer for Blue Mountain with 3 pts after 1 on 1 of 1 shooting.
However, what came next for Walakovits is a milestone every high school basketball player dreams of achieving. In the early stage of the 2nd quarter, Walakovits put his team up 25-14 on a layup and the game was momentarily stopped in honor of his 1,000 point milestone. Walakovits in front of all the alumni, got to see his name etched in the Northampton history books as well and will find his place there on future alumni days.
The 2nd quarter went on as Walakovits continued to lead Northampton with 13 pts on 2 of 5 shooting that quarter. Blue MTN countered with Cohen Werner leading with 10 pts on 3 of 3 shooting that quarter. Northampton carried a slim 30-26 lead into half.
The 3rd quarter stuck to the theme of the game, a close tight-knit affair. Noah Walakovits was still leading Northampton in scoring with 21 pts after 3, and shot 4 of 5 that quarter. Blue Mountain countered with the red-hot Tyeirre Meade, who was up to 17 pts and shot 5 of 5 in the 3rd quarter. The game was coming down to the 4th quarter and a Blue Mountain team that was down 11 when Noah Walakovits hit his milestone suddenly had harnessed momentum.
The 4th quarter was what you would expect. A battle between Walakovits and Meade to see who would will their team to victory. However, Meade and his team would prevail and his 7 4th quarter pts on 3 for 3 shooting brought his total to 24 on the day. Walakovits finished with 25 on the day on 2 of 2 shooting in the 4th. A strong outing from him in the losing effort.
Up next, Northampton stays home to take on the Red hot 9-1 Nazareth Blue Eagles, Tuesday night at 7, while the Blue MTN Eagles will take on the 4-7 Pine Grove Cardinals back at home.
