Easton Middle School District 11 6A semifinal #6 Liberty Hurricanes vs #7 Whitehall Zephyrs got underway at 6PM and this game was a tale of 2 halfs with the 1st half going to Whitehall leading 19-15 after building a 13-6 at the end 1qtr. While the 2nd half went to Liberty outscoring Whitehall 25-16 and 11-5 in the 4th qtr for a 40-35 win that sends the Hurricanes to the DXI finals for the 3rd time in 4yrs. Coach Long about the job his assistant coaches and his team did making adjustments after a slow start. “They did a really good job of adjusting and then our kids just executed,” and “Our kids executed it to perfection. We were really struggling in the 1st half. I thought the adjustments we made really helped us. It takes everybody. That’s the special part about this group. It takes every single person.”
Liberty got on the board 1st when Luke Hefferman dropped one in from 10ft, but the Zephyrs scored 11 straight points, with Jack Lloyd contributing 5 of them. Liberty was down 13-6 at the end of 1qtr. The Zephyrs cooled off a little in the 2nd qtr only scoring 6pts but the Hurricanes didn’t fair much better only scoring 9pts but did close the gap to 4pts and trailed Whitehall 19-15 at the break.
The 2nd half started great for the Zephyrs scoring the first 6pts in a little over a minute and led 25-15 early in the 3rd qtr. But Whitehall only scored 10 more points the rest of the game and with the help Jake Pukszyns 8pts a 2 and 2-3s Liberty only trailed 30-29 at the end of 3rd qtr. In the 4th qtr Tanner Dogmanits hit a 3pt shot to make 33-31 but that was their last lead of the night. Quinn Lucas-Bishop gave the Hurricanes the lead for good with 3:10 left in the game 34-33 when he scored off a Jake Pukszyn pass. Samir Brown made it 36-33 off another assist from Pukszyn. Jack Lloyd made 36-35 with 1:35 left Samir Brown added 2 FTs as did Jarrell Teague Final score 40-35.
Coach Long said “We got 2nd chance points, the offensive rebounding really helped us,” and You could see our kids not wanting to quit. It was really good to see that resilience over the course of the game.” There definitely was no quit from the Hurricanes and that paid off in a date with the Parkland Trojans Saturday 8PM back Easton Middle School in the District XI Championship game.
