Inside Lehigh Valley Softball: Week 4

We’ve reached the halfway point for several programs around the valley and Berks county. Some traditional powers have flexed their muscle this week, while other rising programs have made statements. Let’s begin taking a look at the week that was in softball

Monday, 4/6:

  • Salisbury snapped a two game skid, defeating Pen Argyl 11-8. Julia Carney kicked off her 3-hit, 3RBI day with an RBI single in the 1st. Salisbury was staked to a 3-0 lead after a half inning. In the second inning, she knocked in Tessa Kemmerer, who tripled down the right field line and knocked in two. The Falcons led 6-0. But the Green Knights responded. Reagan Knittle knocked in two in the third when two runners moved up on a passed ball. Aubrey Dehart cut the deficit to 6-4 when she put a ball back up the middle, part of her three hit effort. A leadoff walk to Sydney Foulke, the 9-hole hitter for the Falcons, kicked off the fourth inning. Carney and Gianna Olds went back to back with RBI singles and Brinley Neitz made her lone hit of the contest count, plating two more with two outs. Salisbury was back up 11-4 and well on their way. Pen Argyl came back again, though, as the bottom of their order produced two 2RBI doubles with two outs in the fourth from Aubrey Dehart and Olivia Berhel. The Knights loaded the bases in the last half of the seventh, but Ella Bonatz hit a liner that was caught by Carney at second base and a fielders choice ended the threat and the ballgame. Kemmerer, Olds and Carney all notched three-hit days, combining for 6RBI. Kemmerer had mixed results in the circle–despite giving up ten hits and eight earned runs, she did fan 12.
  • Parkland picked up its third victory, dominating Central Catholic 13-3. The Vikettes took a first inning 1-0 lead when Eloise Brown hit a ball that was mishandled at second base, allowing Kairi Charles to score. Parkland had loaded the bases in the first, but didn’t plate a run. Ami Patel broke through for the Trojans, tripling to the fence in center. Libby Pinkham drove her in to put Parkland ahead 2-1. The game stayed at the narrow margin until Parkland loaded the bases in the fifth on a pair of walks. Allie Flynt delivered a 2RBI hit up the middle to really break the game open at 6-1. The Vikettes responded by loading the bases with no outs, but only pushed across one run. Patel finished with three hits, scoring three times. Addi Fritzinger knocked in three runs on three hits and Shayla Jenkins plated two on her two hits.
  • Freedom dismantled East Stroudsburg North with ten first inning runs in a 15-0 3-inning win. Morgan Pavolko and Madi Bixler combined for the shortened perfect game, striking out seven. Pavolko and Namelia Duro both cleared the bases as the carousel turned in the first. Duro finished 3-for-3 and scored three times. Christina Kish added a solo home run.
  • Pocono Mountain East edged Easton 6-4 in a game full of deep balls that escaped the park. Zoe Betts hit the first, a 2-out solo shot out to center that put the Rovers ahead 2-0. Karlie Jurasits, PM East’s all-time home run leader, blasted a 3-run shot in the third to push the Cardinals ahead 3-2. The game marched on, tied at 3-3 heading to the seventh. Karlie and her sister Kaycee then went back to back, knocking deep balls to right and center. Karlie ended the day with 5RBI on the two shots. Gabby Orsato knocked in a run in the bottom of the inning, but her 2RBI day was not enough.
  • Kandis Barthol got the start in the circle, as Emmaus took care of business against Dieruff, 16-0. Barthol threw a one-hitter, as Milly Matos was the only Husky to break through against the younger sister of former Emmaus pitcher Danika Barthol. Sydney Bennett knocked a 2-run home run and Morgan Schwab went 3-for-3 with 3RBI. The Hornets racked up 15 hits and took advantage of seven Huskies errors.
  • Eight runs over the first two innings lifted Liberty past Pocono Mountain West 8-1. Ella Quayle’s 1-out 2RBI drive to right put the Hurricanes on the board. She was followed up by another 2RBI hit from Brooke Doncsecz with two outs. The Panthers loaded the bases with no outs in the third, but a pair of Jaeyana Watson strikeouts limited West to just one RBI hit by Chloe Straub. Watson picked up another huge pair of strikeouts in the fifth, when the Panthers again loaded the bases with nobody out. She finished with ten Ks on the day.
  • Pleasant Valley led Nazareth 7-0 in the second inning before the Blue Eagles took off for nineteen unasnwered runs in a five inning 19-7 win at home. Maddie Abbatiello launched one to deep center with two outs in the first to get the Bears ahead 3-0. She put one over the fence in right in the second to bring in three more runs and all was coming up aces for Pleasant Valley. But Nazareth began chipping away in their half of the second. It all began with a leadoff walk to Whiteash followed by a wild pitch and an error on the infield. Consecutive hits by Recchia and Ork followed by a passed ball that brough Ork home cut the lead down to 7-4. The Bears left the bases loaded in the third as Taylor Friel snagged a ball at the hot corner and stepped on the bag for the final out. Three walks and three big hits in the bottom of the frame gave Nazareth their first lead of the game. Gianna Perillo put her squad on top when she drove in two on a hit to right. Taylor Friel cracked a 3-run shot in the fourth to take any remaining air out of the Bears, and Perillo followed up with a grand slam to end the game in five. Perillo finished with a game-high 6RBI.
  • Whitehall pounded Allen 16-0, scoring eight each in the first two innings to invoke the mercy rule. Twelve straight Zephyrs reached base before the first out was recorded in the bottom of the first. Chloe Robinson collected two hits and plated three runs. Julia Schell, Evelyn Hudak and Jules Muth all brought in two runs. Ari Casey and Jill Pagan combined to fan eight on a one-hitter.
  • Northwestern Lehigh got out of some early trouble and got past Northern Lehigh 5-2. Emma Freeman snagged a groundball back to her for the third out in the first, stranding two Bulldogs on base. The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the second but a grounder to third ended that threat. Sam Boyer had a breakthrough hit for the Tigers in the second, putting Northwestern up 2-0 on an RBI triple. Nat Conner ripped one up the middle in the third to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead and that lead extended to 4-1 on an Ainsley Behler groundout. Northwestern loaded the bases in the fifth but did not push across a run. Ella Bressi delivered an RBI double to center in the sixth to move the lead to 5-1. Tegan Simms was touched up for 13 Northwestern Lehigh hits and four walks. Emma Freeman did not record a strikeout over five innings, but was able to scatter seven hits and three walks, as her squad also overcame three errors in the field.
  • Fleetwood remained unbeaten, running their record to 6-0 and blowing past Muhlenberg 13-1. Alexa Vorse ripped a 2RBI triple in the first after Lainee Guldner singled in two. GUldner tacked on a 3-run home run late, raising her total to 5RBI for the day. Katelyn Yapsuga also batted in two more. Sophia Breidegam threw a two-hitter, walking two and fanning seven.
  • A six run fifth inning helped Tulpehocken survive Oley Valley 8-7. Tulpy got the early lead on a sac bunt RBI to third base by Livia Kiwak. Emma Ott put the Lynx ahead in the third, flying one to left. The Raiders loaded the bases in the fourth, but Ayva Campbell struck out and Tulpehocken did not score. Leadoff bat Molly Goldberg delivered in a big fifth inning, lacing a 2RBI hit to center. Campbell followed that up by singling her home, giving the Raiders an 8-3 lead. The Lynx fired back with a key 3-run home run from Brianna Garcia with two outs. Oley Valley then got two more on before Taylor Schlegel was struck out by Goldberg to pin down the victory. Kiwak and Goldberg both batted in two runs. Goldberg struck out eight.

Saturday, Owen J Roberts faces another BCIAA foe in Wilson West Lawn.
  • Emmaus posted a second consecutive shutout, 17-0 over East Stroudsburg North. Calise Eiswerth, younger sister of Mari Eiswerth, threw a one-hitter with five strikeouts. Thirteen runs came across in the first inning. Brianna Gitski knocked in two runs and scored twice with her hit. Morgan Schwab went 2/2 with 3RBI and Haleigh Gigliotti led the day with 4RBI on a 3-of-3 day at the plate.
  • Bangor batters were retired in order in the first inning, but broke through as the game went on for a 17-3 rout of Palisades. Three errors in the third allowed the Slaters to get to work, building a 5-1 lead. Madi Gierra added a 2-run home run in the fourth and Kelli Snow doubled home Katelynn Figurski in the fourth to make it 8-1. Four more errors and a walk in the fifth led to a nine run output for the Slaters. Lillian Rambo joined Gierra in having a 2RBI day. Gierra pitched five innings and scattered six hits. She walked two and struck out one.
  • Ella Bonatz took the bump for Pen Argyl and tossed a one-hitter in the Green Knights’ 16-0 win over Catasauqua. Reagan Nittle, Isabella DeCesare and Andrea Nieves all recorded 3RBI days, as seven runs scored in the second inning blew the game open. Madi Beierle got the lone hit in the loss for the Rough Riders.
  • Northern Lehigh rebounded off the loss to rival Northwestern Lehigh by beating Lehighton 12-8. A sac fly RBI for Fiona Jones scored the first run for the Bulldogs, as they loaded the bases in the first frame. Kenzie Chrusical got the third straight hit of the third inning to bring home Kylee Snyder and Emily Gad. Aubrey Reinhard and Addi Smith both plated a run with two outs, staking the Bulldogs to a 5-0 lead. The first four Indians reached in their half of the third. Amber Yeakel singled home Kaylee Magyar. Brynn Mriss and Peyton Hausman both batted in two runs with two outs to tie the game at 5-5. A Savannah Kast 2RBI double from the bottom of the batting order put Northern Lehigh back ahead 7-5 with two outs in the fifth. The hits continued to pile up and the Bulldogs lead 12-5 going to the bottom of the seventh. Addi Smith struck out two in the bottom half to finally close the game out. Chrusical and Smith both finished with 3RBI and Smith struck out ten overall. Peyton Hausman had a three hit day with 3RBI in defeat.
  • Two of the top teams in the Colonial League battled it out Tuesday, with Notre Dame Green Pond emerging victorious over Northwestern Lehigh 7-5. The Crusaders scored all seven of their runs in the first and fifth innings, protecting a 4-0 lead and extending it to 7-0 late. Rachel Fisher brought home Nat Lilly and Emily Szczepanski in the first inning. She later scored on a passed ball. The Tigers did not record their first hit or baserunner until Emma Freeman singled up the middle in the fourth. Ainsley Behler doubled in the fifth but was wiped out in an inning ending double play trying to dive back into second base on a lineout. The Tigers broke through in their half of the sixth, helped along by a pair of infield errors and a walk to Avery Seyler. With the bases loaded and nobody out, another pair of errors led to three more runs scoring. None of Northwestern’s five runs were earned.
  • Southern Lehigh jumped on Salisbury early on their way to an 8-1 win. Demi Lewis and Isabelle Witt delivered RBI hits to right and center resepctively and the Spartans enjoyed the early 3-0 lead. Witt scored Lilly Kelly in the third, adding to her day and putting Southern Lehigh up 4-1. Delaney Young and Clara Detwiler combined to allow six hits and strikeout six. Julia Carney notched two of those hits for the Falcons.
  • Matty Seyfried knocked in two runs and struck out 12 in a four-hitter, playing a crucial role in Saucon Valley’s 14-0 rout of Wilson Area. Rowan Best contributed the same.
  • Schuylkill Valley dropped a 4-3 decision to Susquenita, surrendering a 3-0 lead late to the defending state semifinalists. Kayla Konetsky came through early with a 2RBI single to right. Susquenita stranded four over the first three innings. Konestky knocked in Kori McGonigle in the fourth to push the lead to 3-0. Susquenita came back in the fifth, capping things with a solo home run to take the lead. The Panthers would not get another baserunner over the last three innings.
  • Wilson West Lawn kept their undefeated season going, narrowly getting by Kutztown 3-1. All three runs came off the bat of Abby Zerbe, the ninth hitter in the order. A 2RBI hit early and a sac fly in the sixth gave the Warriors just enough. Wilson did strand eight, as Kutztown was able to limit the damage for the most part. However, Shannon Bratton held the Cougars to four hits, striking out five.
  • Hamburg had no issues at home on Hawk Hill, shutting out Brandywine Heights 9-0. Freshman pitcher Ava Epting threw the complete game two-hitter and struck out 16 Bullets batters. That included striking out two each in the first three innings, three in the fourth, and striking out the side in the seventh. She walked three in a row to load the bases in the top of the sixth, but a double play by Madison Wessner and strikeout got her out of the inning unscathed. Offensively, Moly Krick produced in typical fashion, batting in two runs on two hits. Epting also brought in two on a 2-for-3 day.

Wednesday, 4/8:

  • In a score that raised some eyebrows, East Stroudsburg South picked up a key conference victory, defeating Parkland 13-3 in five innings. It appeared the Trojans would get on the board first when they loaded the bases in the third, but Jadelyn Learn caught a flyball in left field to close the inning. Sophia Castillo worked a bottom of the third leadoff walk. It came back to bite quickly when the Cavaliers strung together six straight hits, five resulting in runs scored. Sarah Tsantker turned the lineup over after her RBI double, followed by hits from Learn, Joslynn Yurescko, Mayla Matthew, and Taylor Carey. Carey placed a 2RBI hit into center field in the fourth to push the lead to 9-0. Sophia Castillo banged a 2-run home run over the fence in center in the fifth. Carey and Yurescko combined for a three-hitter, despite only striking out two and walking six. The win was the second straight for the Cavaliers who will look for a third against rival ES North on Friday.
  • Late inning heroics from both sides characterized Liberty’s 4-3 squeaker over Easton. Addy Smith’s first inning 1-out RBI double held up for a while, as Easton stranded four over the first five innings. Sylvia Stocker was a strikeout victim in the second inning with the bases full of Red Rovers. Gianna Koch’s leadoff walk in the sixth set the stage for a big inning, though, as Easton trailed 2-0. Solid hits by Thalia Burns and Emily Materna knocked in the first Easton run, followed up by and RBI hit from Lana Rush and bases loaded walk to Zoe Betts. Ava Tomac led off the bottom of the frame with a double, but was stranded. Easton held their slim 3-2 lead after six and tacked on one in the seventh with an Alyvia Fleming RBI hit that scored Koch. Abbie Benner started the final Liberty turn at bat with a walk and as the lineup turned over, Cam D’Amico put a ball into center field. Mikayla Seacor pulled the Hurricanes within 4-3 and Addy Smith was intentionally walked, still with no outs. That brought up cleanup hitter Leah Onia who promptly made the Rovers pay, scorching one to left and bringing home the tying and winning runs to walk it off. The two teams played error free softball and Liberty outhit Easton 12-9. Addy Smith struck out eight Rovers and Onia ended up leading her team with those 2RBI in the seventh.

Mari Eiswerth homered in the third on a ball out to left, moving the lead to 3-0. It got to 4-0 on an error at third base in the fourth. To that point, Stroudsburg had stranded a runner in each of the first three innings. Bennett misplayed a ball hit by Kat Lavra in the fourth, allowing the first two runners to reach. Jordan Cook’s sac fly got the Mounties on the board, trailing 4-1. The errors piled up in the fifth, as two more and a Dot Elko hit made the margin razor thin at 4-3. Taylor Hauver helped Emmaus lock down the win, cracking a 2-run home run to center. At the end of the day, Mari Eiswerth threw a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and walked only one. Six Emmaus errors nearly was enough to give Stroudsburg a signature victory, though.

  • Easton took a first inning 4-0 lead at Nazareth. But it was not to be, as the Eagles flew high for the next 14 runs scored, run ruling the Rovers in five. Avery Kauffman plunked the first two batters she saw and Easton took advantage on a Thalia Burns RBI double. Kauffman struggled, walking three more and throwing a wild pitch that scored a run. Two more scored on an error. Trailing 4-0 out of the gate, Nazareth got to work. Two out hitting was the name of the game, as Brianna Recchia brought home Taylor Friel on a hit into right. Both Kauffman and Taylor Whiteash kept the inning going with hits. Kauffman’s hard grounder to center brought in two and gave the Eagles a lead they would not relinquish. Carly Brown tacked on a hard hit to short that drove in another. Easton loaded up the bases in the second, but Gianna Perillo gloved a popup to strand them all. Friel and Sydney Ryan went back-to-back to open the third inning with solo home runs to right and center. Kylie Grover pitched the final four innings, giving up one hit and striking out four.

Ava Fagan-Huse drove one past the left fielder, bringing in two more for the 4-0 lead. The next five Stroudsburg base runners in the game came on two third and fourth inning walks and an error in right that got Perez on at third to start the fifth. She was sacrificed home by Jordan Cook. Perez singled home two more, totaling 3RBI on the day. Bella Altemose homered late for the Bears to bring the final score to 7-3. Jordan Cook scattered six hits and struck out three.
  • Seven runs crossed home plate in the sixth inning for Pocono Mountain East, helping the Cardinals pull away late from their rivals from the West. • Fleetwood remained perfect on the year with a score that turned some heads in Berks County. A seemingly never-ending seven run second inning propelled the Tigers to a 10-0 mercy rule win over a Twin Valley squad that some believed would be top contenders(and still could be). The loss for the Raiders snapped a six game winning streak. Peyton Trexler led off the second inning with a solo bomb out to center field. Blair Rauenzahn followed that up with a 3-run shot on a line drive over the fence in center. With the early 8-0 lead after two, the Tigers had roared and then cruised. Sophia Breidegam used 74 pitches to one-hit the Raiders and struck out nine. All nine in the Fleetwood lineup either hit or were credited for an RBI.
  • Reading took a 6-2 lead at Governor Mifflin before the Mustangs woke up to score 13 of the next 14 runs in a 15-7 victory. Errors on the infield and an RBI single for Sophia Redner made it 3-1 Knights. Three straight singles opened the third, with Kellyn Paulino plating two on her flyball to right. But soon came the fifth inning and the comeback for Governor Mifflin was on. Sam Wagner kicked off the inning by doubling to right. She scored on a passed ball. Martin, Hoover and Guigley each brought home two runs from the top of the order, combining for eight hits.

Shannon Bratton singled up the middle and an error got Maddy Snyder on base. Two passed balls scored the runners. Bianca Ramos’ sac fly got Muhlenberg on the board trailing 2-1. The fifth inning saw Kaya Werley reach base on an error and Ava Legath doubled her home to make it 3-1. Snyder ended up with 2RBI for the Bulldogs. Bratton and Legath combined to only allow four hits and strikeout nine.
  • Notre Dame Green Pond nearly fell into a trap game that opened up Colonial League play day on Friday night at Patriots Park in Allentown. However, they pulled away late for a 7-1 victory over Northern Lehigh. Tegan Simms singled home Kylee Snyder in the first for an early 1-0 Bulldogs lead. They held that until the fifth inning. The defense overcame two Crusaders reaching in the fourth. However, NDGP broke through in the fifth off of a Riley Palank RBI triple to the fence in right. Rachel Fisher’s bunt single plated another for the 2-1 lead. A two-out misplay in center on a ball hit by Gabby Apgar cleared the bases for a 6-1 lead. Emma Freeman was on fire in the circle, only surrendering three hits and striking out eight.

Aylexia Guller and Mackenzie Ferber tacked on 2RBI singles in the third.
  • Saucon Valley defeated Salisbury in the closest game at Patriots Park, a 3-2 contest. The Falcons stranded two in the top of the first. In Saucon’s half of the opening inning, Alexis Quinones walked, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. She was sacrificed home by Matty Seyfried for the early 1-0 lead. Seyfried then struck out four Falcons in a row before Tessa Kemmerer smacked a ball to right field. Misplays in the outfield allowed her to come home to score and tie the game. Seyfried kept the Falcons off the board over the next two innings, striking out five of six and the side in the fifth. Neveah Quinones walked in the fifth with two outs, moving up twice on wild pitches and scoring on an error. Salisbury was able to get the tying run on base in the seventh, but Leilanna Negron struck out to end the game, as the throw was made to first on the dropped third strike. Matty Seyfried struck out 13 Falcons on the day, while Tessa Kemmerer was also great despite the loss, fanning eight and allowing just two hits.
  • After a Friday night contest at Pates Park, Notre Dame Green Pond showed no signs of slowing down Saturday morning in their 18-2 explosion at Bethlehem Catholic. • Wilson West Lawn had an uncharacteristic day in the field and at the dish, falling at fellow top-five state power Owen J Roberts 10-0 in six innings. The score turned heads across Berks county, as the Bulldogs committed six errors on the afternoon. Star pitcher for OJR Maddie Reed one-hit the usually powerful Bulldogsl lineup. Ava Legath’s first inning triple, where the wind barely took away a home run, was an early chance that went by the wayside. The win for Owen J came a day after they fell to Boyertown 16-14 in a game where Reed did not pitch. Wilson had beaten Boyertown 8-0 earlier in the season. See the above interview with Maddie Reed. You can listen to a replay of this game on the Eastern PA Sports Network, as well.
