Inside Lehigh Valley Softball Week 5

Monday, 4/13:

  • Wyomissing fell to Pottsville 9-3 in nonconference action. Kylie Schoedler gave the Spartans an early 1-0 lead in the first, singling up the middle to score Caris Way. But the lead was short-lived. By the time Wyomissing got its next baserunner in the fourth, they had fallen behind 5-1 to the Crimson Tide. Taylor Watts grounded into a fielders choice at short and scored Schoedler, but the big inning was averted when Addison Lecher grounded out. The Spartans then stranded the bases full in the fifth. Schoedler and Way were hit 13 times by Crimson Tide batters, mostly from the bottom of the order. Reese Ketner went 4-for-4 with three runs scored for Pottsville. Izzy Kunstek and Jo Barnhart had 2RBI each.
  • A walkoff grand slam in extra innings lifted Bangor over Northern Lehigh 7-6. The Bulldogs built a 3-0 lead over the first three innings, on RBI hits by Addy Smith and Tegan Simms. But Kelli Snow rallied the troops with a 3-run shot to left in the sixth to tie the ballgame. Annalisa Douglas scored on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth, followed by hits from Kylee Snyder and Kenzie Chrusical that moved Northern Lehigh ahead 6-3. After three straight hits opened the bottom of the inning for the Slaters, Snow again rocketed one to deep left for the walkoff grand slam, completing her 7RBI performance in tremendous fashion.
  • Jim Thorpe pounded out 19 hits in a 13-0 defeat of Catasauqua. Madison Schwartz pitched a 75-pitch no-hitter over five innings, fanning nine Rough Riders and walking three. Julianna Frantz capped the scoring with a 2-run home run in the fifth, part of her 3RBI day and three runs scored. Gloria Strohl matched her with 3RBI and scored twice on a 3/4 effort. Isabelle Sully also went 3/4 on the afternoon.
  • Northampton made short work of Whitehall in a 10-0 five inning shutout. The Konkrete Kids rallied following a loss to state power Pine Grove, putting up eight runs over the first two innings to bury the Zephyrs quickly. Rylee Gable recorded her 200th career strikeout and Hannah Duerr and Avery Deibert went back-to-back in the first inning on deep shots. Deibert clocked a 3-run shot out to right in the second inning, as well. Deibert completed a 5RBI day. The Zephyrs threatened with bases loaded in the first, but Gable struck out Jillian Pagan looking to end the inning. Julia Schell was thrown out coming home in the second to end another potential Whitehall rally. Freshman Kiley Henritzy ended the game in six innings when she singled home Josephine “Jojo” Siegfried.
  • Northwestern Lehigh improved to 8-3 by rolling past Salisbury 10-1. Abby Dunstan provided a two-run home run with two outs in the first, going over the fence in center. The Falcons stranded ten runners on base, frequently getting two runners on in the same inning. Five errors by each team did not make for a clean game, and the Falcons did manage eight hits, but Emma Freeman and Ainsley Behler combined to strikeout seven and only one unearned run crossed the plate. From the leadoff spot, Ella Bressi went 2-for-5 with three batted in.
  • It was a solid day at the office for Notre Dame Green Pond, as the Crusaders pumped out 19 runs on 19 hits, capitalizing on six Wilson Area errors in a 19-5 win. Riley Palank was a perfect 5-of-5 with two home runs and six runs plated. Rachel Fisher cleaned up from the cleanup spot, going 4/4 with three batted in and three scored. • The Palisades Pirates went one game over .500, defeating Saucon Valley 10-6 and halting a two-game Panthers win streak. The Panthers led this game 6-0 and Palisades had only one baserunner over the first three innings, showing nearly no signs of life. Matty Seyfried cruised aloing into the fourth, staked to that 6-0 lead by RBI hits from Ryan Gall, Savannah Schlegel, Rowan Best and Nadya Vutech. Catie Russo doubled to right to open the fourth, and Kendra Leidtke singled up the middle to put Pirates on the corners with no outs. Groundouts by Nadia Wilt and Emma Crooke drove in a pair of runs to pull Palisades within 6-2. Julianna Hershey singled home another in the fifth after the first two batters reached again to start the inning. Russo hit a sac fly, bringing the score to 6-4. Leidtke tripled home Hershey, making it 6-5. The game-tying RBI hit came from Fiona Kelleher in the sixth. Hershey doubled home two more and Russo finished it off with a 2-run home run. In the third, Molly Goldberg and Ayva Campbell both reached with no outs, but were stranded. Meanwhile, the Saints got an Eva Gallo RBI single in the first to go ahead 1-0. She was later tagged out going home for the final out of the inning. Two out hitting was key again in the third, when a misplay at second base scored Brinley Harter. Emily Schearer singled into right, plating Adrianna Cirulli-Ramirez. Berks nearly tacked on in a big way, but left the bases loaded in the fourth. Abby Eckstein drove in a fifth inning run, moving the Saints ahead 4-1. Over the final two innings, the Raiders managed only a walk against Harter.
  • In a nonconference game that was rescheduled from back in March, Hamburg topped Tamaqua 10-6. The final score is a bit misleading, as the Hawks rolled out to a 9-2 lead in the fourth. Norah Davey scored twice in this game on wild pitches. Mackenzie Hoover hit a solo home run to open the second inning. Davey in that same inning tripled home two runs. Brianna Mengel’s 3-run shot in the fourth out beyond the center field fence blew the game wide open. Davey ended up going 3/3 with two batted in and four scored. Mengel totaled four runs battedi n. Bratton, Caitlin Figarola and Rylea Fick each got an inning in the circle, each striking out two Blazers and combining on a three-hitter.
  • Twin Valley rebounded from their 10-0 loss to Fleetwood, defeating Exeter 6-4 and moving to 7-2 on the year. All six runs came in the third inning after both sides stranded a few runners over the first two innings. Maggie Krall homered to start things off, going deep to center. Emma Hahn then flew one to right to single in Ella Herbst. Jayda Weiler hit a liner up the middle to bring home two more. Jill Warner countered for Exter with a solo shot to lead off their half of the fourth, but the Raiders had done enough to survive an Eagles comeback bid late. After Eiswerth struck out the side in the fifth, Emmaus got to work. Three straight one-out singles by Haliehg Gigliotti, Autumn Tarbox and Taylor Hauver resulted in a 2-0 Emmaus lead. Hauver’s hit to right got by the defense, allowing the second run to come in. Eiswerth struck out her counterpart Zbylicki to open the sixth before the Cardinals found their footing.
